Dahlias take a long time in my garden to bloom. I probably start them too late. But, oh my, when they finally bloom they are so worth waiting for!!
Too right, Cayuga. Those are some very lovely specimens. I especially like that first one, although the big yellow one is impressive. Great year there.--Chapeau.
Beautiful! You said "you start them too late".. does that mean you store the tubers through the winter? If so, how do you store them? I tried with tuberous Begonias and they did not sprout the next year.
Hi @2ofus , I dig the dahlias up after the first frost zaps them, let them dry a bit for a day or so in the sun. Then I put them in a black plastic bag with peat moss & stick them in a cool part of the basement. I do the same with canna tubers. I have never been successful growing tuberous begonias.....they have never lasted to the point of being stored for the winter, so I don't know if this storage plan works for them.
Lovely Dahlias Cayuga Morning,..big blooms as well,..i do also like the little one. I have Dahlias,..the Pom Pom and the miniature,..the latter i will store in the greenhouse but the big ones i leave in their container outdoors,..our Winters are fairly mild so this is possible,..i don't see any blooms on mine until the first day of August and they remain in bloom at present.
