Hello, I am trying to grow Zinnias, Geranium, Pansies, and California Poppy's for my pet tortoises. I was wondering if these flowers could be grown indoors in a windowsill planter and/or a flower pouch year-round?
Welcome Eric94 . So what kind of tortoise do you have??? Do you have a warm light corner in your house or even a greenhouse???? I keep some hibiscus and mandevilla for Alice in my greenhouse for winter. Alice is a sully...
Thank you! I have two Red Foot tortoises, they're in a small room in my house with a very large window that let's in lots of light. I've already bought a few plants like African Violets, Spider plants, Hosta, Flowering Maple seeds, and a few Optunia Cacti.
What I save are just very small treats for Alice in winter. Lil snacks... I have to buy dandelion, mustard leaves and kale along with opuntia pads and fruit. She eats about 2 bunches of the first 3 and a few pads a week and 1 fruit a month. I used to save and freeze grape leaves for the winter but that was a pain when she eats so many other things.. Eric.94 Where do you live? I am in Pa where it gets too cold for Alice but we work with it...
Seeing a tortoise in the snow really makes me blink and rub my eyes. Hope it doesn't catch pneumonia.
No..no she goes out for 5 minutes and then comes back in to warm up.. she really loves it..and is very healthy.
Beautiful tortoise! I live in south PA. Do you grow your cacti or buy it? What type of potting mix should I use for it?
LOL ok....I live north of Bethlehem....I also have a Russian tort who east almost what Alice eats. I do grow my pads but they are just getting started. They will be of good use next year...It's cool that they live this far up north....Lucky Alice, or my pocketbook...LOL So "New Seed" do you garden???
I'm trying to get into gardening haha, eventually I want to start an outside garden. Do you know how necessary fertilizer is? Would water from a turtle tank be a good organic substitute for it?
Probably it would be....I think if you just get potting soil you will be fine...then water with your second hand water...
Your tortoise is super cool (even in the snow!). Wherever did you find him/her? I don't think I've ever seen them for sale around here but they sure be cute.
Alice is a girl. They are in pet shops for sale when they are the size of half a tennis ball. A very old friend had 2 Geochelone sulcata (Sully) or African spurred tortoise. One stayed very small and the other got to be 17 pounds...12 inches long...LOL She wanted to find a person who would take good care of her pet, thankfully, she thought of me...She is now 55 pounds and 20 inches long. She isn't nearly half grown..She is challenging to keep here in Pa but we make it work. She is domestically hatched and grown but her original family comes from the Sahara Desert. Alice is loved by all my gardener friends and regular friends. They come over to visit her more than they come to see me. LOL
