I have what I believe to be a Harry Lauder's Walking Stick or contorted hazelnut. Every image i see looks the same, I will get a picture and post it tomorrow. ( I guess it is still possible that it is not a HLWS or contorted filbert but the picture I hopefully post tomorrow should hopefully confirm it. My question is, why have I never seen catkins nor flowers on it in 3 years? I have actually had it for 5, planted it in the ground 3 years ago and it is now well over 8 feet tall and beautifully full. I started reading a lot more and every image i see they always have catkins on them. I have never seen them on mine and I would like help in making sure that I give my HLWS what it needs to produce catkins for the fall beauty. Do I simply need it to get a little more mature before I should see catkins. My other question is how to prune it so that 1) I can control the height and get a really gnarly corkscrewed bushy look, and 2) get the branches really intertwined so my local birds can use it for nesting. I have started a bunch more, like 30 of them in the last two weeks. I won't give away my secret, yet, but if this time is a successful as the first, I should have 25 plus to play with and grow this spring. Before i ask here in this forum, would this be the right place to post questions about growing HLWS as Bonsais?

I still can't find anything that says why it won't produce catkins or flowers. I have not found anything that says there is a variety that doesn't produce them.
