I just have no idea how to title this post and after staring at the blank screen for quite a long while that is the best I can come up with.

My problem is the earth in the pot had compacted and shrank so much and I am worried that it might just killed the plant.

I think I had too much compost in the earth when I started out but I had to to ensure that the earth is not water logged. The mud content of the earth is very high.

In the past I just topped up with compost like adding mulch of about an inch and the plant died. Now I am thinking of repotting it but is afraid that it might go wrong.

I have no idea why but it is very difficult for me to propagate sage from cutting nowadays. This plant took me more than a year after lots of failed attempt. In the past it was real easy, just cut a stem remove the extra leaves and pop it into the ground or pot and it'll grow. this was in my old place.

So any suggestion or tips would be most appreciated.

gently turn over the pot and remove the plant. refill the "missing" soil in the bottom of the pot and settle the rootball back in on top of the new soil?

I second Carolyn's idea. I've re-potted herbs, including sage, that way. Let the soil get dry so less falls off, fill the bottom with fresh soil (more than you think you need), make a slight hollow in it and set the plant with its rootball back into the pot, tamp it down and water thoroughly. The soil line may be right at the top of the pot, but within a short period of time the soil will settle, especially after a couple of waterings.

KK, I grow my sage in the ground...it is quite prolific, almost like a shrub more than an herb plant. I have to hack it back periodically. I wonder why you are having trouble. I know sages need a well drained sandy loam, not too rich. Maybe too much water, too rich?? Good luck. I agree with the other re re-potting with more soil at the bottom. Maybe add some small stones over the drainage hole.
