Is it just me, or does anybody else have problems starting bunching onions from seeds. I have sown them off and on several time over the years and each time they do not make it. I planted two packets of seeds this year. Two packets have a whole buck of tiny seeds. Well, I saw 7 that came up the other day and today I could only find 5. Anybody have any tricks, or words of advice. Everything else grows fine. Tomatoes, peas, watermelon, squash, okra, corn, cucumbers, carrots and more, but having trouble with bunching onions
I’m guessing that what you call bunching onions, we call salad onions or spring onions? I do okay-ish getting them to germinate but find I need to keep them on the dry side of damp if you know what I mean, I find they rot off ever so quickly if they are too wet and cold at germinating time. Then they seem to sulk for months, then suddenly they are away, but never in time for a summer salad.
Hummmm. I may have to make a small 2' x 3' raised bed just for them. I guess the amount of watering I am doing for the other plants is too much. Your explanation makes perfect sense, I just did not know it. Thank you EJ.
Just get plant starts,, they are much easier. I have never had luck with seed. Your luck may be better than mine !
Mart, I did do plant starts for large onions. But, I have not found plant starts for bunching (multiplying) onions. I am wanting to get bunching onions because my mom had them. It brings back fond memories.
Papaw, ask at the feed store. One of their customers will have more bunching onions than they can handle, and would be happy to give you starts. Shortly after we moved here a neighbor stopped by and asked if we'd like some bunching onions, and gave me about a quart of them. I've been giving away, sharing, and trying to contain bunchers ever since!
