My late wife bought this plant many years ago. She was told it is South African and flowers. When the leaves died back my late wife pruned it down. It has never flowered and I think it should not be pruned down too much. I have no idea of the plants name. Any answers would be welcome on what it is and how to look after it. Thank you. David M.
Boy that looks like trumpet vine, or trumpet creeper vine. Campsis radicans. If so, you may want to read these comments on this plant. https://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/644/#b
Since your wife was told it is South African it is most likely PODRANEA ricasoliana common name of Port St. John Creeper. https://www.smgrowers.com/products/plants/plantdisplay.asp?plant_id=1310 https://www.southernliving.com/plants/pink-trumpet-vine It needs full sun and moist soil and blooms in late summer through to first frost
Toni, I tried to look at the leaves of the Port St John Creeper & they don't look serrated like David's plant. Of course the photos on line focus much more on the flowers rather than the leaves, so it is hard to tell. Take a look.
Thank you all for the suggestions I will be looking them all up and see what matches by the names you have given. David M.
Hello All, After searching round I have decided that my plant is a Trumpet Vine. It fits the criteria. Thanks again. David M.
