I know most of the birds here and usually its just the sparrows, cardinals, jays, mockingbirds ect ! But today there was a new one here and I am hoping some of you will be familiar with it.! Its a small bird slightly smaller than a sparrow or I should say more streamlined. It has a brown back,, yellow breast, dark brown or black throat ! It has been eating corn with our local birds. I can`t post a pic. Usually around noon to 1 PM I will fill a low place in the driveway for the birds to bathe in ! This bird was taking his bath today . He has slightly longer beak than the sparrows but not much more ! Anyone have an idea what it is ?

Mart, does you bird look like this? if so, it is a Yellow Breasted Wren, which is in your area, although not common. Isn't is great to have a new bird show up?

No,, I know the wrens. We have quite a few of them. This one was more streamlined ! Not a short fluffy, round body,, longer but the beak length is about the same ! Also was a little bit darker across the eyes. Either a dark brown or black throat, brown back and yellow breast ! I have not seen it before and didn`t have much luck finding it in the birding sites !!

Could possibly be a Pine Siskin. They are in the finch family, and do hang out in most of North America.

Nope !! Not that one,, had a solid yellow breast, brown back. Was smaller than a sparrow and more streamlined and slightly longer beak ! The male ( I am guessing) had a dark throat patch but the female, (another guess,) did not ! They were eating chopped corn with the rest of the birds and bathing in their water hole,, but they didn`t seem to mind. I am just wondering what bird it could be !

Mart if it's possible could you take a photograph of your bird? I know this isn't always possible but it really would help us out. Failing that are you any good at drawing? Even a rough sketch would give us a clue. I have to admit that I'm intrigued as to what your little bird is and would love you to get a positive ID for it.

That one isn`t it ! Just a plain brown across tthe back !! Can`t take pics because I had a virus in my computer that attached itself to my pic program ! Ransomware is no fun ! I would be sending it to anyone that clicked on the link to the pic and that is not a good idea !! Only saw them yesterday and the day before. They may be around but do not have time to just sit and look for birds. Only noticed these because they were not normally part of the sparrow croud and I know most of the common birds here !! They yellow breast caught my attention because we do not have them here !!

That is a Meadowlark. Not sure if "Eastern" or "Western", but where you live it could be either.--- Excuse me, I thought northerner's picture was the bird in question.

Another bird with a solid yellow breast, is a yellow breasted chat. Though the back is an iridescent olive green at least on the male. They are very rare*, and do NOT look like their picture in the field guides. The female might have a brown back?

I have seen 4 of them, 2 were dead unfortunately. But the first one was freshly killed by a car ahead of me. I brought him home in a sandwich bag, and froze him. My ornithology professor had him mounted as a museum specimen. I was taking an ornithology class in university at the time, and they do not look much like their picture in field guides.

*My book claims they are "common", but my professor said they are rare.

You might also compare pictures of common yellow throat to see if that might be what your bird is.
