According to one of my local weather apps, there is a very large front moving from West to East across Tennessee. Today, it's gonna rain like crazy, flash flooding is possible, but temps are gonna hit the 60's. Meanwhile, arctic air out west will be racing across the nation, arriving in my neck of the woods Saturday night, which should then catch up to the precipitation and transition from rain to a wintry mix/freezing rain, and eventually to snow sometime very late Saturday night. The accompanying severe drop in temperatures will mean that there will be slick spots, ice, etc, affecting travel Sunday along with the 1" to 2" of snow also predicted.

Nashville doesn't get much snow, sometimes none at all, though the temperatures do fall considerably in the winter, sometimes into the teens. When snow IS predicted, the locals go crazy! People literally flock to the grocery stores to stock up on "necessities" and I'm not kidding you when I say the bread and milk aisles are typically cleaned out!! There are so many jokes that float around about "milk sandwiches" and the like with the accompanying ridicule about Nashville taking the possibility of snow so seriously that they will rush to the grocery stores and the gas stations to "get prepared." It's especially funny when so often the prediction of snow is wrong and there's none at all, or a mere dusting. TDOT has been issuing bulletins about salting the roads and getting all kinds of heat because they CAN'T put the brine mix down when it's raining! I mean, duh!!!

tldr: Nashville is ridiculous when it comes to the potential for snow events. What about where you live, how do you prepare for severe weather?

we are very used to a lot of snow. no amount of snow is going to change anything really. I like to use the handbrake on some turns when the roads are nice and slippery.(GF hates! that.lol) never really had to prep for some severe weather, I guess we tend to do bigger grocery lists in the colder months so we don't have to go out as much?

We live in New England where winter storms are common. Nevertheless, people STILL flock to the food store to get water, food. It is crazy because if it is a bad storm, we tend to lose power, so guess what happens to all that (fresh) food!?!

@Ronni we are due to get that same storm, maybe we will be hunkering down here just like you there!

Well here in Scotland we're more than used to bad weather. Do I panic if we get five feet of snow and can't leave the house - NO. I can bake, I have food in the freezer and long life milk that lasts for ages. The dog has plenty of dry and wet food too so no worries. We have wellingtons and waders if the need arises. If we can't use the car for a few days then at least we're saving on diesel!!
However, most folk panic buy too though and stock up on stuff that, when the weather clears, they have to throw out as they've bought way too much.

Well, it sure did get cold, still is brrrrrr!

The predicted "snow event" was very mild. I have a good friend who runs NashvilleSevereWeather.com. They report local weather but in an hilarious way! His report of the snow that fell Saturday night:

This was a decks, mailboxes, sidewalks, garden gnomes, grills, and fence tops event.
There just wasn’t enough snow. Winds too strong. Ground warm and unreceptive, like that date you stood up at a Miami restaurant one June Saturday.

It won't warm up much around here, for a while. It hit about 13 degrees at its worst, and it's going to be in the teens till around noon today, and as is typical for Nashville, the reported high for tomorrow is 50 degrees!

Living in rural Ontario, we quickly learned that it is beneficial to keep extra water, food, firewood, gas and pet food around. We are always ready in case of bad weather!
Today, we are all home because of cold temperatures ... the school busses aren't running due to the -43°C temperatures this morning, and my son (who works outside) has the day off.
This doesn't happen often, we are more likely to have 'snow days' when the roads are dangerous due to heavy or blowing snow.
We are equipt with a generator, plow truck, snow blower and 4 wheel drive vehicles so we could get out if we wanted. We usually choose to stay home :)

We keep the pantry well stocked (hubby is a federal employee so we never know when the government will shut down from year to year) Anyway when, but seldom, when we do get a bad storm forecast we sit back and watch traffic reports of the newer arrivals to this state (typically those from up north) who think they can drive in any kind of winter conditions slide down streets and into ditches because we almost always have a heavy ice storm before the snow starts and covers it and we know to stay home.

I don’t mean to belittle those of you who have hurt genuinely severe weather. I can’t imagine how you navigate those kinds of temperatures. I’m just talking about the folks who see a snowflake and panic!! Like what happens here in Nashville every time there’s even a SUGGESTION of any kind of weather event!! .

Ronni I always think snow gives a lovely coating..even though my body can't stand the cold but to admire it and how it coats the ground always looks a stunning picture.
