We have 2 golden retrievers called Barley and Berry. Barley is 7 and Berry is 5 years old. We had them when they were 7 weeks old. They'll live from 10 to 14 or maybe 16 years old like logan did.We did have 5 at one stage, next year we might get another.

The common pipistrelle ( Pipistrellus pipistrellus ) weighs at the most, 8 gram. This is the sort that is by far the most common in Holland...he feels at home in cities and therefore it is why we see it the most. Its winter sleep is about up no, and in fact I saw the first tiny dropping on the outside windowsill (there is a street lamp down below one of the windows). My grandfather used to laugh at me when he would send me up in the rafters of the barn to collect a couple of jute sacks. I peeled back a couple and they flew out at me like bats outta hell. Of course the very first time, I was so shocked that I let go and fell down onto the hay. All very exciting. My gran was not happy with my grandfather on that occasion...as she twigged that he let me go up and get thosde sacks knowing full well what would happen when I disturbed them. I discreetly snickered, feeling that I got a sort of indirect revenge. chortle.

The big and bulky first buds on the chestnut tree look like a large and tightly rolled bud. Only after this "bud" opens do you discover that is wasn't just one leaf but rather a complete set of leaves and a bloom bunch on a stem.

The eggs of the Lesser Whitethroat ( Sylvia curruca, a warbler sort) hatch in ten days only.

It is interesting to note that the Northern (or Arctic) Fulmar broods for 52 days and the Wandering Albatross for 3 months! So you can see that the little lesser whitethroat's accomplishment is a sort of record.

The idea of converting human body heat into a form of usable energy has been targeted by scientists for years. A resting human male gives off roughly 100-120 Watts of energy. Thermoelectric technology currently is only working the fan on my wood stove. Possibilities for the future?

    5
The Black-winged Stilt nests on five continents. This a remarkable-looking bird if you ever see one. It's legs reveal its common name.

    150
Arrhenatherum elatius has many common names, but it can grow to 150cm high. We see it here along the sides of roads and train tracks ...and in the garden.

    2
The Heermoes (Equisetum arvense) has two guises or appearances-- in the early Spring it sends up a greyish stem with a spore cone on it, then later in the season it sends up a green stem that folks here generally refer to as a horse tail. Of course it must have yet another name in West-Friesland.

    30,000
A dragon fly has 30, 000 facets making up their eyes. The more facets there are, the more precise the insect can see. This facet number varies with each insect sort.

The Microtus arvalis (a vole sort) can be a grandmother is only 3 months. This dubious honour even surpasses rabbits!
These little beasts are on the menu of several predators, mercifully. Urmmm--is "mercifully" the right word here?

    3
The Pieris napi butterflies fly around three generations at the time. They are also prolific and a nuisance to gardeners. It is only the third generation that over winters as pupae.

    36
A swan's egg hatches in 36 days. The Cygnus olor female broods the eggs and the man defends the nest from all perceived dangers.

    400,000
That is the number of beetle sorts that have been identified worldwide. In our country there are more than 6,000 sorts of lady birds alone!

Hi Sjoerd! About the voles... prolific little buggers eh?
We have a resident neighborhood Fox population these days so the nemesis voles that have plagued my garden have been significantly reduced.

    Hiya Kay !
Yes they are. Oh, if only there was a fox here. There is a hermelijn on our complex, but he can't be everywhere at once sadly. Great to see you.

    6000

    170
A seed ball of the dandelion can have 170 “parachutes” with seeds .

    600
The shrew’s heart can beat more than 600 times a minute.

    65,000
If you are not a beekeeper you may not think about how much a single bee must fly to produce the honey that you use for your, tea or yoghurt.
For one gram of honey, bees will have made 65,000 bloom visits.
When you realise that tens of thousands of flights and many millions of bloom visits are necessary to fill a jar of honey, then we ought to look at that jar of honey that is your kitchen cabinet with much more respect.
