How do you know if these are ready to pick since they are green tomatoes...Aunt Ruby's German Green (or vice versa)? Getting a bit nervous since i see little holes on the leaves below it.
I don't think they're that different from the more usual red or yellow ones. My rule of thumb with any tomato is if it's soft it's ripe if not give it another week. Hope this helps you a little.
Thank you Eileen. A section of my tomato plant was chewed down by the time i got home from work yesterday ...I knew what to look for thanks to this forum and videos!!! This thing is why I was so nervous about the tomatoes!!! Tomato Hornworm!!!!! Ordering a blacklight today!!!!!
If you look at the leaf below the tomatoes you'll see a couple of black dots... These are the tell take sign of hornworms! Get ready to drop the hammer on them! Ooohhh, do I dislike a hornworms...
Yes Catdaddy...that's what made me nervous....bought a blacklight flashlight and went out at 10 last night with my hubby, hunting for anymore. There were none, so i sprayed neem again all over the plant and the eggplant right in front of it. Will go out until the tomatoes are ready to pick.
I only grow red tomatoes, so green would be for fried green tomatoes or pickled tomatoes. Hornworms are on my kill list, if I see tiny black poop on the leaves, I hunt them down, clip off the branch they're chewing on, let it drop into a small pail of soapy water and drown. I wear gloves because they scare me to death. and infuriate me
