so I picked a pepper the other day and took a bite of the end to see if it was a hot pepper. seemed sweet not hotness, then later I ate the whole thing and I could definitely taste some hotness but it was very mild, so good! another pepper off the plant next to it was quite HOT. did my peppers cross-pollinate? could I plant a hot pepper in the middle of sweet peppers and get some sweet+hot peppers?
They can cross but you would have to save the seed and find out next growing season ! It is not unusual to have different heat or sweet levels on the same plant ! Weather and water can also affect the peppers !
Mart was correct. they can cross pollinate but you need to save the seeds and regrow them. you wont see that on the fruit you are growing this year unless it was cross pollinated last year when the seeds were forming.
ah ok, I was just thrown off when one pepper was WAY spicier than the other. I have 3 different types of pepper plants all growing next to each other I might save a few seeds form each of them and use that seed for a few pepper plants next year and hopefully get a cool hybrid.
Adam to be sure of cross pollination it is best to hand pollinate and mark the pollinated fruit. The link I posted explains. https://homeguides.sfgate.com/cross-breed-pepper-104045.html This is pretty much the same for potatoes.
My first large red bell peppers are ripening in the tomato house they were from transplants in March.
