I saw it when it was tiny, and left it alone. What I thought would grow up to be a praying mantis actually became a fat grasshopper family. How do I get rid of them? Just trap them in a bowl and carry them away? I think they're eating up my capsicum plant leaves. Pictures in case I'm mistaken about its identity. I also have a toad camping somewhere on my patio. I thought it might like the grasshoppers for brunch but I don't see that happening yet. Thoughts? Are toads good or bad for gardens? Are toads dangerous to have around if I have a dog? All my plants are potted. Thank you in advance!
Yes I think it is a grasshopper in your photographs. I know that American toads will eat grasshoppers but not sure if other toad species do or not. We have toads here and they are good for gardens eating lots of pests such as insects, larvae, spiders, slugs and worms.. As for toads being toxic to dogs I found this information for you:- “Toad venom poisoning can be fatal to some dogs if left untreated and signs can appear within minutes. The toxins can cause dogs to foam at the mouth, vomit and show signs of distress such as pawing at the mouth and eyes. Dog owners who suspect their pet has licked or eaten a toad should contact their vet straight away or, out of hours, their nearest vet surgery." Taken from Vets Now website.
Plantmom, that is definitely a grasshopper. I'm in Texas and I KNOW grasshoppers. Neem sprays kill 'hoppers, as does a garlic/hot pepper spray you can cook up yourself, just be sure to thoroughly wash your blender before making a smoothie! Toads are good for the garden, and we've had toads when we've had two dogs and four cats (not all at the same time) and never had a problem. Toads are adverse to interacting with mammals, and can hop really fast! 2-4 cloves of garlic. At least 4 hot cayenne (or hotter) peppers. 2 TBSP olive oil or other liquid oil. 1 TBSP liquid castile soap 2-3 cups hot water. blender towel, strainer, or cheesecloth
I personally love toads. Have ever since I was a kid. They are great for the garden and I have never known a dog or cat to eat one. Supposedly they taste awful.
