It is that time of season again. Under the oak trees with the squirrels searching above for just the right acorn snack, you can almost hear them say: green? yep,next...green? yep,next...green? yep,next.... The discarded chards rain down, crashing through the leaf canopy to the ground below. A hazard zone for those so brave as to walk under the trees. The yard is populated with over 50 oak trees so finding a safe refuge for gardening could provide a lump or two or three. The ground is littered with corpses of once bitten seeds. However, while the chipmunks may need a fallout shelter, the humans have hard hats!!

The wife can safely water the new lawn seeds.

Well Jerry, I have to congratulate you on having a lovely wife who knows how to handle a hose!
We don't have oaks, but being bonked by a pecan isn't much fun. During "nut falling" season I try to stay away from pecan trees. Luckily, our almond trees are still fairly small (15') so we don't get bonked by almonds.

Brilliant! I have a similiar situation and will definitely share this with my wife! Our hard rain will start over the next few weeks!

No bonking, as the walnut tree is in the neighbors yard. Pulling seedling walnut trees by the dozen is an overwhelming job this time of year for me. Heaven forbid they get past the seedling stage as it is all I can do to pull the little devils with such a long tap root.

A recipe I have for precision killing of vegetation involves donning mechanics grade nitrile rubber gloves first and pulling a cheap cotton or absorbant glove over that, where touching the gloved fingertips into herbicide can be a delivery mechanism of high precision over a large area. If the area is not large, an artist style paintbrush on its long handle might serve better, but in any event a small quantity of potent herbicide is one pathway a person might choose

DM, my brother has used the paintbrush method, but the glove method is a great idea.

Great idea your wife has...we had a black walnut tree on the property we bought and what a mess they made...we decided to have it removed so we didn't have to deal with 2 & 3 nuts falling on our heads at a time...
