How many laughing faces can I use!
Dirt-mechanic, you're missing a very nutritious green by not eating Kale. The small leaves are tender and sweet. As it grows, it becomes tougher and tastes stronger. Small leaves are a great addition to a salad/ Steamed and chopped it's great in veggie soups. Very appetizing sauteed with onion, garlic, whatever one likes. I planted 4 rows and after eating it, freezing it, friends are picking it. It will supply volunteer Kale if left to seed it;s self.

Going to plant seeds this weekend for the fall garden. Not wanting to get crazy but will do a tray with 3-4 varieties. It's only the second time trying a fall/winter garden.

Garlic and kohlrabi are for sure but I may include some beets as well, since they can turn around quickly.

I have only a few spare pots to plant anything in, and planning to plant some softneck garlic and spring onions, if I can find the seeds (probably in October)! Any other suggestions for things that would grow in small to medium sized pots?

Bok choy is great in small or medium pots! Last spring I grew 2 in a gallon pot and 3-4 in a 3 gallon pot. They mature in 40-50 days.

I actually do not mind kale when it is super tender. And its great -but not tastier than spinach.

True, spinach is delicious. Mine bolted quickly this year.

Plantmom, lettuce grows rapidly and should do well in pots. A tomato plant would grow well, but if it gets cold, not a good choice.
We had so much volunteer lettuce this year, we shared with many neighbors. Ready to take out the Gone to seed lettuce, I shook the seed heads all around the garden, hoping for more volunteer before frost.

@Growingpains , I do the same thing with my lettuce. I let them go to seed and then have so many seedlings come spring, I am handing them out to the rest of the community gardeners! Such a richness of lettuce seedlings!

Cayuga, doesn't it feel good to have plenty to share?
I only wish tomatoes were so plentiful. We have enough for eating, but no excess.

Last year I had 32 tomato plants. This year 16. Even 16 makes more than we can use.

    GP, YES it does indeed!

I have 4 tomato plants in pots on my terrace and two in my community garden. I have enough for our use and some to share. Not a lot though. At home unfortunately the chipmunks have taken a liking to tomatoes this year. I keep catching one out of the corner of my eye making off with a little ripe one in his mouth. I make like an enraged leprechaun (I am small & of Irish descent) on our terrace yelling at them! I am sure I look ridiculous.

:like: I'm imagining a Leprechaun chasing a chipmunk, "Give it to me!"
We devour quite a few tomatoes in a day. Tomato and cheese on toast
for breakfast, tomato sections for lunch, tomato sandwiches at snack time.

I had a tomato fantasy where I thought dried tomato was gonna be my thing. Even bought a second dehydrator. Waay tangy for my unsophisticated taste buds.

Only a gardener would have a tomato fantasy.
