Today in 1863 – War of Northern Aggression: Second Battle of Sabine Pass – On the Texas-Louisiana border at the mouth of the Sabine River, a small Confederate force of 36 Texans thwarts a Union invasion of Texas. It was hardly a fair fight, though. The Yankees had four gunboats and eighteen troop transports carrying 5,000 troops. There were THIRTY-SIX Texans. Feisty bunch around here
Sabine must have been way bigger back then,, I wouldn`t get on it in a rowboat now !! At least in some places !!
In 1970 the Sabine River Diversion Canal was created along the Sabine River so fresh river water was diverted to provide water to several cities and farms along it's banks. Much of the canal is underground.
Interesting. I love history. For some reason, I had the idea that the Sabine River is more in west central Texas? It has been awhile since I read those stories, so I could be mixed up. I tried looking it up, but the maps online are way too small to make out anything, and they are not enlarging when I click on them. Guess I will dig out my Atlas. (And I lived down there ten years in the late 70s and 80s)

We lived in the Ft Hood area about 4 years while DH was in the Army, and then up near Ft Worth 6 years. It is way too hot for me.
