We are considering options for a heater for a bird bath in a place we can view from a front window for the winter. I have two concrete birdbaths in my back garden that are too heavy to move, and we do not have electrical outlets on the outside of our home. I just go out and clear the ice from them when they get frozen. I'm looking for ideas for an inexpensive container and heating element to set up for the winter months, near a feeder that we enjoy watching out the kitchen window. My Bob sure likes to create his own and save money. LOL so I'm wondering if anyone has a good idea? I have an extension cord already out there that I have Christmas lights plugged into, so it can provide the power. Just trying to decide the proper bowl, and a good choice of heaters. Thanks for help

This is the latest 50 watts version we have. Its robust being buried in a mass of metal, cost about 25 bucks but is safe enough. You need to be sure your circuit has a ground fault circuit interruption plug. These can be on an extension cord. That way if the electricity decides to go through you instead of back to the house on the neutral, the gfci will pop off. The aquarium heaters are basically the same wattage and cost about 9 bucks. But they are not encased in a slug of metal so not as robust.

I distinctly remember a large number of youths hanging about a fountain in a social district when I was in college. They were all being different. Wearing black. Hi Kay. I'll put in my two cents. That heater that dirtmechanic showed you would work great. Now for the container--I use a larger plastic pot bottom that a plant pot would drain into for my bird bath. They are light weight and come in several colors. If you don't think one would be sturdy enough then place one inside of the other and use two. Hope that helps.
