Our suet feeders have been hard hit lately. Here's a cardinal enjoying a snack. If you don't have a suet feeder, please get one (or two or three) because the birds love the suet cakes with seeds or peanuts or "high protein" filler. You will be amply rewarded! P.S. The blue flower in the background is our rosemary in bloom.
I agree the birds here really enjoy their suet. Mine love the suet cakes filled with insects and mealworms.
Eileen, our birds might like the insects and mealworms embedded in suet but, as much as I like to cook and experiment in the kitchen, I do draw the line at insects and worms. That just isn't going to happen! Perhaps the "high protein" cakes include the above mentioned bugs, but someone else gets to handle them--not me!
They're dried insects and mealworms Jane so I don't mind too much. If they were alive the birds would have to do without.
I find the cheapest food is the suet, free from the butcher department . Here we have a few bushtits enjoying a piece.
Kildale, I'd get suet from the butcher department if we had such a thing, but since we don't, we put out the cakes from the local hardware store. They are on sale at 69 cents a cake, and come in four varieties--high protein, peanut, bird seed, and songbird mix. Is one of the above better for birds than the others?
With all this staying at home ( which I actually do a lot of anyway) I love my feathered visitors and spend lots of time watching. We have 9 feeders and are preparing to put the Oriole feeder back out soon. The robins are loving the mealworms. I keep 3 bird baths heated until the weather warms up.

Hi all. Been a while since I have posted anything. We also can get suet from local meat butchers. But they charge us for it. So we also buy the suet cakes at our local Fleet Farm store. Here is one bird that has been coming to our suet feeders for the past several weeks. I was shocked to see him there, but also so thrilled that he comes everyday. I am so jealous of you southerners. You already have stuff in bloom. We had a one inch snow fall last night.
