I usually have no luck with French beans but last year and the year before I have bountiful harvest from my French beans which I planted 3 times. This year I got a new species which is heat tolerant and I don't think it is going to be a good harvest. The beans are not forming and about 70 per cent of the flower stalks have no bean and the rest only a few.

This is how I planted the beans which is the same way last year. Planting them on the wall save space and getting rid of beetles is easy.

    An empty stalk :(

I can only find a single stalk with acceptable amount of beans.

I have kept everything the same as before and I am beginning to believe that this new species is not working for me or is there pollination problem?

Hi KK, how's everything else going? :stew1:

Alright, after looking at the pictures, a thought came to me, that maybe your soil is too wet, (due to the climate).

So after a Google search I found this:

    https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/edible/vegetables/beans/bean-blossoms-no-pods.htm

You KK have more experience in gardening then many of us, including myself. Therefore if you can't get these beans to produce a healthy harvest - I am sure none of us would be able to either...

My thought of too much wet soil came to me. When back in the early 90s I was growing something similar in my garden. But the flowers kept falling off.

I wasn't over watering, but my mistake was planting them just before the rainy season.

Otherwise, I too have no explanation...

maybe it's just behind by a week or two for whatever reason?
pick off the couple beans you do have, this should promote more bean to grow.

No I don't think so Adam.ca because it is way past its maturity date.

Mart it says 50 days and can continue for 2 months. Mine is already 70 days past :(

I think soil acidity and alkalinity should be tested. Just so this possibly can be ruled out.

    maybe.

    Google quote:
maybe you haven't had any wind? ok, this is going to sound crazy but go around and use two fingers to gently tap-tap-tap on all the flowers, or shake the whole plant! this should make sure each flower is pollinated.

Adam it had been pretty windy as always, thanks anyway.
I think I'll go back to the other species that I had success with.

Too much wind and the flowers break off. Pole beans hate wind.

Thanks Odif, when the travel restriction is lifted here I'll go get the seeds for the species I am used to and plant them. I guess this is the only way the mystery can be solved.

KK, how hot does that planter get? When you try again with new seeds, how about using a bigger planter that is light in color to absorb less of the heat of the sun's rays? I say this assuming the problem is related to too much heat.

BTW, glad to see you again!
