Hi. Hope you can see the images. The small growth is just below the tassel. Looks like it’s developing small corn kernels. I do have nice cobs development in the regular areas. Anyone ever see this?

Yes but I don't know what it is. Fungus?
Someone else here is sure to know.

Never seen anything like that before...

Could they be eggs of some insect perhaps?

I don't know how this is even possible, because it simply can't be - But they look exactly like cancer tumors of the reproductive system in mammals, (which is impossible in plants).

Yes sure, everybody can have a good laugh at me for saying this. But I was recently reading up on the Chernobyl Nuclear Reactor Disaster of the Soviet Union, (in 1986). So that's why this silly though came to mind...

However this is what I found when using Google to look up any possible cause. Doesn't really have the answer we are looking for. But it's a very interesting read.

Thank you all for your input.
I am located in Southern California, and it’s a sweet corn, white variety although I’ve discarded the packaging and do not remember the name. It literally looks like small kernels of white corn on a growth just below the male tassels. It is the only one and all the stalks are growing fine with healthy cobs almost ready to pick. Although the Chernobyl idea did weird me out S-H

Well, I was reading about the effects of ionizing radiation on living tissue of highly complex creatures, (humans). Specially when it comes to the creation of Teratoma tumors, (demonic tumors) - These tumors look like the scariest monsters that anyone will ever see.

They contain several different types of cells which start growing various body parts such their own set of hair, teeth, eyeballs and even organs plus tiny hands and feet. But completely out of arrangement, (like somebody scrambled the entire design of the human body).

I think you should start propagating this. Because if it's really a new mutation, you might become a very wealthy owner of an exotic variety!

I think if its sweet corn,, it could be the same fungus we have had on occasion ! It will mature and turn a bit black ! It is an edible fungus and the Latino population use it ! We had that problem when we used G-90 sweet corn ! When we changed to Peaches and Cream sweet corn,,,no more fungus ! It doesn`t hurt any thing,, just looks weird !

Sjoerd thanks for the reminder of that! It was so long ago I'd forgotten.
Thanks Mart - I just bought some peaches and cream corn to plant.
Boy do I love fresh corn on the cob!
I'm constantly amazed at the collective knowledge that comes out of all you wonderful gardeners.

Cayu-- No worries. It really is an interesting phenomenon.

4-G-- You are welcome. Just happy to see you again. You are right though--that old posting was a long time ago. Oh, I love sweetcorn as well, however, this year and last there were just too many mice and a couple of rats on our complex, so we decided not to experience the heartbreak of destroyed crops again. I shall give it a few years before trying again.
