Thickest, Nicest, Organic Bunching Onions?

There seems to be so many produce recalls these days that I want to start growing my own veggies. I'd like to start w/ Bunching Onions (aka Scallions). What's the best brand of ORGANIC bunching onions that are nice & THICK? I don't want those too-skinny ones.

So far, that Tokyo Long White type seems great! But, maybe the Evergreen White or White Lisbon. I'll keep doing more research. I'm in Southern California & would like to start growing in the next 2-3 months IF that's a good time. (It's now very early Sept 2020.)

What is/are the BEST brand of seeds? Any tips, info, etc.? TIA!

You might check here ! I do not grow them but may try ! I just have no luck with seed for onions !

Strangest thing. I have always grown nice onions. This year, they came out of the earth just as they were when I planted them. Garlic did very well. Really odd.

 

organic is only HOW you grow them. if you are looking for someone that does grow them or produce seed the term"organic" can be selective in its meaning. I saw a new one for this coming season called Warrior. it is an aars winner. I saw them in the HPS catalog.

 

Carolyn, is that a Swallowtail larva/worm ? I saw a couple in some of our flowers. I love Swallowtail butterflies. The Monarchs are heading
south now.

 

Some of the nicest scallions I have are volunteers. I bought store scallions some years back, used the tops, and planted the bulbs. When the greens grew back, I let them go to seed. The seeds came back with thick, stocky green onions that, if left to grow, produce an almost full-sized onion bulb. I suspect the store scallions are hybrid, and the seeds reverted back to original stock. Since most people like their scallions thin and pale, they don't want the parent stock.

I just let a few go to seed every year now, and save a head or two. (I also end up with volunteers every year in just about every pot!)

Spector, do you use the stems too? I think your idea is great and I may adopt it.

 

Thats what I do with the large onions that begin to sprout ! Just stick them in the dirt and shortly they will grow the green onion tops ! I use those more than the white part of green onions !

 

Yes, I have been using one this year as a cut and come again. I have about six planted up by the house that I cultivate from, and I let a few volunteers in the garden go to seed every year. I can't remember the last time I bought scallions.
