I was digging out compost this morning, and admiring our volunteer fall garden. In one compost pile we have two Roma tomato plants thriving, and in the other pile, a very nice squash vine. I'm trying to keep the cats out of the compost piles. We have enough cats already! More popping up would be something we couldn't handle!
It's past the season for growing tomatoes here sadly. It will be spring before I get the chance to plant more seeds. So glad you're enjoying your volunteer garden.
My fall tomatoes and summer left overs are still putting on new ones ! But I am afraid we may get a frost before they start to turn red ! Maybe fried green tomatoes instead of bologna and cheese with fresh tomatoes ! Cucumbers are still keeping me supplied !
I followed Sjoerd's advice and dug our tomatoes up, knocked the soil off the roots & strung them up upside down in the garage. They are continuing to produce delicious tomatoes safe from the frost.
I had a tomato plant pop up in my compost pile late summer. It is the only tomato plant left alive in my yard after all the frost we have had. It has been protected by a large maple tree, and it has sprawled out over the entire pile and has hundreds of cherry tomatoes on it! Amazing!
One year I had a bunch of those volunteer tiny tomatoes ! Had a snow and when I checked there were many ready to eat under the snow ! I just put the snow back over after picking some since it insulated them !
