We have a variety of sparrows. They always look as if they are dressed for the office! Neat and tidy little birds, that don't throw seed around like some of the bigger guys.
This is a Chipping Sparrow--named for its call, not because it throws chips on the poker table;)!

Are you sure it is a chipping sparrow? My chipping sparrow pics have a solid brown patch, could be a juvenile Golden crown or white crown.

Cute birds. I have no idea as to which kind of sparrow it is but i do think it's the cap and the stripe at a rakish single that makes it look so well dressed.

It's pretty audacious of me to speak to Kildale about identifying birds--his knowledge of birds is so much greater than I'll ever achieve.
However, here goes! According to the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America, the winter adult of the Chipping has a "streaked crown showing some rufus color". We have White Crowns, and in January there aren't any juveniles, and we are not in the Golden Crowns range.
I thank Kildale for the conversation, and for introducing me to the Golden Crown. Neat bird which I will try to lure to Central Texas!
