Looking forward to learning a lot from everyone. Does anyone have a psychic feel for the coming spring and summer?? After such a wild winter what do you think Spring and Summer will be like? I am hoping for a coolish season for the midwest but . . . . who knows?!
Hi there and welcome ! I learned many years ago not to try and outguess the weather ! That said however,, I am hoping for a mild spring ! But since I am in Texas,, well you know I may be totally wrong ! PS,, You do not want to know about Texas summers !
Hi there E.A and a big welcome from Scotland in the UK. Here we never try to predict the coming seasons. Spring can feel like winter and summer like spring. We just go along with whatever Mother Nature throws at us.
I just adore Scotland!! I am a huge fan of Andrew Cotter (and of course, Olive and Mabel). I bet your garden is quite a bit different from what I am working on in Kansas. Each year seems a bit cooler here in the summer than the last. When I was a kid in the 60s and 70s Kansas summers always were hot. Not so much now and I love it. All the stuff I have read about Great Britain has made me very envious of your cooler climate. Lets hope the weather gods are very kind to us both this year!!
As for Texas - I DO know what your summers can be like. Maybe there will be a cool weather vortex (I think we are both owed after this Feb.) and we can leave the watering to the weather and reap the benefits!

Hmmm....I have a book about Kansas....."Oceans of Kansas" by Everhart....A little before your time as your oceans have dried up. I understand that one of my favorite wildflowers comes from Kansas, "Campanula Americana". Smart plant. In our yard they grow best protected by daylily greenery, least the rabbits make lunch of them. What kind of plants do you grow? Glad to have you with us, Jerry
This year I want to build some new beds - I am chasing sun that is being stolen by a large sycamore tree. I want to use large branches cut from the sycamore as edging but am a little worried that this might cause bug problems or have other drawbacks. I expect degradation over time but has anyone used the same sort of material as bed edging and do you have any advice about how best to use it??
Thanks for the kind welcomes from Jerry in MA, Netty in Ontario and New York! I am a huge fan of the American revolution and colonial culture - that is my winter reading. New England looks to be a beautiful place from all the pictures I see. I used to dream of living in Canada because I love winter, but as I have grown older I am not as tough as I used to be. It must be wonderful to live in a place that is beautiful year round and never over 100 degrees with 95% humidity! Happy gardening to everyone!! Spring can't come soon enough!
Welcome... Weather is not so settled the last few years in S W France...should be warmer now so that does affect the sowing of my new venture of growing the cheap way.. although I have a new Greenhouse it is in pieces still and could do with some psychic help with it...should be looking like this.... but it is back to this...will have to do a thread on Greenhouse disasters. ...
