I've ordered seeds, and so I'm now going to start a new garden - Which will only have carnivorous plants. From all over the world! Anybody got any ideas or some personal experience with such plants, please feel free to share!
Can you please share some pictures of your plant? I would love to see. As well as learn any special care techniques you use.
I got Peat Moss and seeds of a pitcher plant delivered to me yesterday! So shouldn't be long until I get the rest also.
I don't know much about them but I fill the pitchers half way with water and keep it there. I also spray it with plain water.
That's actually all what we need to do. They are high humidity loving tropical rainforest plants. Their soil needs to have little or no nutrients, (their roots mainly function to keep them upright). While they take most of their energy from the insects which they digest. Since your plant is looking healthy, means that whatever you are doing. Is perfect! They to need some light, but too much direct sunlight, or it can burn them... A little known fact is, that in order to propagate them from seeds - We need a male and a female plant in close proximity. Like papaya trees. I had this same plant, but when I was away for a few days. Some stray cats in heat dug it up and tore it to bits... Fortunately, I now have bought the seeds for it online. So hopefully I can have this plant again, (if the seeds are of good quality) - Otherwise I would need to go to the annual flower show to get this plant again. Which I do not want to do, specially not during the pandemic. Also have an unresolved grievance with them, so until a certain annoying issue doesn't get resolved, I'm never visiting them again.
I have this very cool "L" shaped terrarium that we have built a glass greenhouse top on. I have always had it set up for carnivorous plants. I may set it back up soon. This is at the time I had little house plants in it..
I think you should also start ordering more carnivorous plants and seeds - Of different types! It will become a most rewarding adventure in horticulture! We would also be able to exchange notes here. And share pictures of how our plants will be doing. I by the way am going to start out small, from seeds, as I desire to experience the entire process. Another reason for starting out small, is that I will be able to control the environment easily, (without getting overwhelmed).
My special tank is empty at the moment. I am cleaning the glass. Then I will be ready to set it up. It has gable screens and I set a small fan in one side after it is ready for plants I will probably add seeds in one side at the beginning. You are right starting out small is less overwhelming and safer.
So far, the only seeds which are available to me via online stores functioning in my area of the world - Are the Venus Flytrap, and the Pitcher Plant you have, (which I too had before). But everyone in the comments section is complaining that the seeds are either fake, or very old, and so not viable... So I have not found a single comment which claimed success. However, I believe that everyone is making the mistake, of feeding these seeds regular water from the city supply. Which has chemicals added, to make it safe for human consumption and domestic use. These chemicals in my part of the world include Chlorine, which they use to sterilize the water, (do that algae and other pathogens don't start growing in it). And Alum, which is a double sulfate salt of aluminium, as it sticks to all the suspended particles, making them settle down. Source of the water is collected from the Indus River - Anyhow they actually add Alum first, before anything else, while the water is kept in their humongous storage tanks. So I am reasonably sure, that using water from the city supply is going to kill off the seeds, as well as fully grown plants too (as these plants are said to be very sensitive to such chemicals in the water)... In North America, they add fluoride in the city water supply - Therefore non of this is going to have a good effect on the seeds, or the plants. They all should be fed either collected rainwater, or deionized distilled water, (use in car batteries). The third option is, use water which is discharged from the air-conditioners. As that too is very soft water, (condensed from the moisture from the air). So I believe, that nobody else will be taking this much care. Which I guess explains why everybody is complaining, that the seeds aren't viable. Their soil too needs to be depleted of all minerals. Because these plants take their energy from the insects which they consume. Honestly, I can't believe that all seed stores are selling fake seeds. So I again say, that everybody is probably making this mistake. Because of which their seeds aren't germinating... Otherwise I can't understand why nobody has been able to make them grow.
I agree. I can't believe they are selling fake or not viable seeds. The first thing I would think is they are starting them in the wrong environment, keeping them too dry or something like that. I have had my Venus flytraps flower produce seeds and make new plants. I pollinated them with a small paint brush. I did nothing else so it can't be hard. I have not done this with city water. I only have well water.
