We have had a young squirrel coming to eat recently ! I always put him a little pile of corn close to the elm tree so he can get away from the dogs !
He got spooked by something and up the tree he went ! I went out to see where he went and as I looked up he was coming down the tree ! I came back to the deck and watched as two bluejays attacked the squirrel ! He was a youngster so he really didn`t know what to do ! He circled to the side of the tree closest to me and about half way down,,, the blluejay fllew into the side of the squirrel and knocked him to the ground ! He kept going around the tree to stay out of range ! Poor squirrel all he wanted was a meal ! Next day it was mockingbirds ! Chased him across the road !

Sounds like the birds are protecting a nest of eggs or hatch-lings from what they consider to be a predator. I have watched several squirrels running away from a bluejay who was chasing them, attacking their butt and the squirrel running on only the front feet trying to get away.
I feed the squirrels far away from where the bird feeders are.
