This year for the first time, my currants bloomed in the spring. Bright yellow flowers. I was anticipating a great harvest, but there is nary a fruit on either bush. Thoughts about this? Does anyone have experience growing currants?
I grow black currents in my garden. They get white blooms in the spring and black berries mid summer. The Golden current that you have might get fruit later? You had lots of blooms so my guess is there weren't sufficient pollinators.
I had no black currants this year, but loads of red currants, even though the red currants flowered earlier, my guess is the cold damaged the black currant flowers.
I have grown red and “black” currents. The red and black currents are giving fruit here right now. I just threw some of our nets over the bushes of the neighbour lady who is on vacation at the moment as the merels were beginning to feast. I think that Netty may be spot on.
I've never seen golden blooms on currants, are you sure it's a fruiting one? Mine has very small white flowers on black, red, white and pink currants. There's a ornamental one that has red flowers.
Its been a couple of weeks now...how is that current bush doing? What are the fruits like? Got any plans?
No fruits. Nada. I think the bees were unable to pollinate it due to all the rain. Is that plausible? Can bees fulfill their bee responsibilities in the rain?
Yes, but I believe that your problem is the same as many other gardeners—weather. Dry, wet, dry, wet...cold...dry, wet. So many of over here have that same problem as you with various plants. p.s. Sorry that you didn’t get any currents this year, meid.
Cayu—I was looking again at that foto of yours up above, of the yellow-flowered current bush. I saw lots of bare ground close by. Was that foto taken before your veggies got going, or is the foto more currant? Do you plan to leave it like that or plant some green manure or more winter or fall crops?
Sj: early spring, before the asparagus was up much. You can actually see a spear or two in the second photo. Never fear, all my ground is covered now!. Well, not quite. I just harvested the garlic and have sowed lettuce & swiss chard seeds in it's place. I also plan to sow some kale. I read in one of your posts that you are planting a cover crop now in some of your beds, yes? Do you ever sow a second crop of peas?
Well, Cayu—we sometimes sow second crops, but our growing season here is so short that it doesn’t always work out well. We have planted peas twice but not with great results (unless our second planting is also in the late-ish spring), I suppose that it is because peas like cooler weather better than the warmer weather that we sometime gets. This year we are sowing late leeks and andijvie as well as the green manure. Swiss chard is another thing that we sometimes we plant late.
Late leeks? Hmmm that's an idea. I think here they'll only grow as big as scallions. What is andijvie?
