This was a plant stand that started life as a home bar. Or maybe it was meant to be a plant stand. My mom called it a "pie stand". I don't know. It was in bad shape - ready for recycle or upcycle.

The "wood finish" was some sort of plastic on MDF board. It was sagging badly in the middle, and the plastic was peeling off. I don't like MDF anyway - it has a chemical odor. The rest is steel, mostly in good shape, a few chips and rust spots. I took it apart, threw away the MDF and plastic. I found a long 2 foot wide board in the shed, cut it to fit and glued together to make it 2 feet deep. That's about a foot deeper than the original, which is nice. I added a edge so if plants leak water, it stays on the tabletop. Instead of drawers, I added a front apron to support the top and hide light fixtures I planned to install.

Then I spray painted the metal with an "antique bronze" Rustoleum, and painted the edging black. Using spray paint, the wood grain shows through on close inspection. I added a coat of polyurethane to seal the wood edging. I cut some left over "driftwood" vinyl plank flooring for the top surface and used silicone caulk to seal it in.

Im very happy with the result. Since everything but the spray paint was leftover, the cost was under $20. I added hooks to the underside of the table top, to hang LED light fixtures. I made this last year but wasn't on Garden Stew then so thought I would share.

I would like to add another wider shelf under the top, but have not got around to it.

Excellent Daniel. That's one of the best bits of upcycling that I've ever seen.

I love it! Upcycling is so much better than simply recycling. You did a great job!

Thank's for the nice comments. Upcycling is a fun way to be creative and make something fun and practical. It's also frugal, so I can use my funds for something else.

You have much talent Daniel, and sharing it here is so much appreciated. This kind of work will encourage others to make an effort and try similar ideas. I am very much a believer in reusing as much stuff as possible rather than throwing it away.
