Last autumn, I began hearing a bird that makes a sound similar to the accelerating whir (wine) sound of a truck engine. I'd hear it occasionally throughout the winter and even last week there was one morning the bird repeated the call a few times. That was the first time I had the chance to run for my recorder. But, of course, by the time I came back to the window, it stopped. I cannot see it when I look for it. I've heard it at dawn and dusk. I joined a bird forum, but they are having a very difficult time identifying it without the recording. It's not a Mocking bird. I've listened to hours and hours of every Wren, Warbler, Thrush, Finch, Grouse, Grackle, Sparrow, Starling, Oriole, Robin, Cardinal, Blue Jay, Black Bird and Cowbird. I've also listened to other animals just in case the sound I'm hearing isn't a bird. It's a bird. Now, I'm working my way through a wiki list of every bird in our area throughout the year. Does anyone here want to give it a try? Southern New England. In the mean-time, I'll keep listening and try to get that recording. Edit: Another sound I can compare it to is the acceleration noise of one of those little battery-powered kiddie cars. Similar.
Could it be another animal ?I can not think of another with a similar call ! Now when I think about it several types of tree frogs have odd calls ! Most do not sound like frogs ! In this warm weather they would be a possibility to me !
Do you have flying squirrels? They sound like birds at night. I kept thinking that some dumb bird was giving away its location at night to its disadvantage. Turns out it was a dating game and I was the square.
That is so cute! I've only seen regular grey squirrels around here, except yesterday I saw a red one on the way to church. It could be a squirrel making the sound but definitely not frogs or toads, as I've heard the sound during the winter, too. I've been listening to every bird call for every bird in our region and have been listening to squirrel noises as well but still haven't heard it. I have heard two trucks over the weekend make the sound I've been comparing it to. They were both large Dodge Ram pickup trucks. I've listened to so many birds, I'm leaning towards a possible wren, but I am starting to think it may be a squirrel as well. It is difficult to find the lower tone sound in a bird, mostly higher pitch whistles. The wren is as close as I can find. I'll keep listening. Every so often a chipmunk decides to serenade me, loudly, chirping directly at my window from about 12 feet away. Loud and annoying for first thing in the morning. Now, he seems to be having a conversation with a bird. They gave each other some short chirps back and forth for a little while. Cute. Thankfully, he was facing away from my window this time. Oh, and yesterday a bird answered the squeak of my breaks when I was on my way home from church. That was kind of funny.
Thank you, @Tetters . That little animal sure has a cute little voice but that's not the sound. So far, I've heard it at dawn and dusk. It sounds like the whirring of an accelerating engine, but it is definitely an animal making the sound. I haven't heard it in about a month, but I'll keep listening and try to get a recording of it.
