During the current heat wave, I've been making a lot of cold salads and non-cooked dinners. I want to cook, really mixing ingredients, prepping, and having a morning in the kitchen. So I broke down and made cassoulet this morning. This is not a hot weather food, but by golly, we are having it for dinner tonight! A cook can only hold off so long before breaking and doing some real cooking!
I'm sure its not as hot here as in Texas, but we've also had a very hot week. Hotter than this Canadian girl likes! We've been having a lot of sandwiches and salads too. Tonight I'm going to BBQ some burgers!
@marlingardener who can blame you? Tonight was 'Taco Time" at our house. The filling needed cooking, and the shells needed heating, but the rest was cold. This is our first month with the outdoor range, however that was unplanned. I'm now someone to avoid, having the annoying enthusiasm of the new convert. I barely use the indoor stove. Tomorrow, I'll cook potatoes and eggs for potato salad, and make potato pancakes and make zucchini cookies.
Only 110 degrees today ! Now down to105 ! Spending time in the kitchen is about all you can do here ! Got to get down to 99 before I go outside ! Is that a white bean cassoulet ? Recipe ?
Jane— How was your cassoulet received? I know I had to re-hydrate after hearing about it. I call you, “Masterchef”.
Dirt Mechanic, I used chicken and sausage. If I ever get my hands on a duck, I'll make a confit with it. Frozen or dressed out duck is pretty scarce around here! Sjoerd, funny you should ask--we are having the last of it for tonight's dinner along with some homemade apple sauce. My husband had two helpings on the first go-around. I think he liked it !
Well done, mate. That sounds like a success to me. In fact, I generally like left-overs better than first day served versions. Haha. The Bride suggested that I voluntarily sign-in to a looney bin when I inquired if we should cook the meal the day before for our dinner guests. Cackle.
Sjoerd, no need to sign into a looney bin--just come to Texas! We can sit on the patio and roast, talk gardening while looking at the cooked flowers, and haul water to the remaining vegetables. Doesn't that sound like fun? I promise you lots of left-overs!
