Hi all, I just got back from a trip to Florida and it's time to get going on Community Garden business. We had a successful business meeting while I was in FL, over zoom. About 3/4 of the Gardeners participated, which is pretty good. Since then, we have been approached by our Town to participate in the Earth Day Celebration at the end of April. We've agree and we have 4 volunteers to man shifts. We will talk about & demonstrate: 1) Composting 2) Our critter-proof fence that is now powered by a solar battery 3) The invasive jumping worms that have moved into Town. We have handouts for all three topics to give out. I am hoping it goes well and that Townspeople will actually show up!

I like the sound of that. It is notoriety for you guys but will also show what interest others in your community have. I shall be looking forward to some commentary and foto’s. Good luck with that.
We have done Earth Day presentations, and found that people are eager to learn and happy to have something to take home in hand to remind them of what they learned. The handouts will be very helpful. Are you planning on small tours of the community garden? Mid-April is pretty early, but you could show them how to build a raised bed, compost in the making, and basic tools needed for gardening.
Fall is approaching and our Community Garden is winding down. We've had our end of season clean up & most gardeners participated. The Garden looks pretty good now. I'm busily mulching my beds. This Friday we'll will be having our end of season potluck at my home, on the terrace. I'm hoping for good weather. I'll have a fire pit going if folks get chilled. The only fly in the ointment is that we have what we call a sink hole on our terrace. I'm planning to hand out bungee cords to our guests upon arrival and also to have a ladder at the ready.
May I also suggest flares as well as the bungee cords. You never know. Boy, that sounds like a fun do.

My husband filled in the sink hole (again). This is the 3rd or 4th time. But at least we won't lose any gardeners down it this Friday during the potluck. (I've put away the ladder.) He bought bags & bags of sand & a cement gravel mix. The sand etc keeps getting pushed up against our foundation, and eventually the bricks in the terrace start caving in. We clearly have some kind of water problem undermining things. It's a puzzle. We had an excavator come out to give us an opinion....and get this....he thought it was.....chipmunks!!!! My husband & I just looked at each other. This is the hubbie sweeping sand in the cracks. Wish I'd taken a photo of the sink hole in all it's glory. But don't worry it'll be back & I'll snap it's portrait then.
Well, there’s no sign of a sinkhole there. Are you sure you’re not having us on? It all looks so tidy. Now then, when you have the potluck, wil you be having activities for your guests with a pothole, erm…I mean sinkhole theme? You know Cayu, like a zip-wire ride to the bottom with a 3 km boat ride looking at the glow worms, followed with hot chocolate crustless sarnies and jammy dodgers before the camel ride back up to the top along the scary circuitous footpath. Be sure to offer numbered headlamps to the punters so that if any are missing after they emerge, you can send down the rescue helicopters to retrieve them.
That's a lot of sand and concrete! Gosh CM - that is awfully close to the house. That's a worry. ( ermmmm....sounds like a perhaps second opinion is warranted for the Munks being found guilty?...they'd have to be the size of a Rottweiler me thinks....with teeth from one of @Odif 's woodchippers )
Oh Sjoerd, you have me in belly laughs! You've got a great imagination! Numbered headlamps & a rescuing helicopter! A zip line to the bottom! And Melody, yes those chipmunks would have to be the size of rottweilers! Chuckle. It was ridiculous, his saying it was chipmunks. It was hard to keep a polite straight face when he said chipmunks. My husband & I just looked at each other. I had to look away before I cracked up. Our problem is, we don't know who to consult. I'm thinking a hydrologist, but where do you find one of those? It isn't actually a sink hole. The sand is not actually disappearing. It's getting pushed up against the foundation underneath that addition. The addition is on pillars. Anyway, the potluck happened. Everyone had a great time. We didn't lose any gardeners in the sinkhole. It got a little chilly, so we sat around the gas fire pit. No frozen gardeners to defrost. It was a success.
CayugaMorning. The foundation guy is absolutely right…. Oh yes the chipmunk/squirrels … answer is absolutely correct….I have a few chipmunks that have dug huge holes under the foundation causing cracks in foundation under concrete walk ways they have done thousands in damage. I also use ammonia soaked rages to evict them…. They are very destructive. Like to get in the attic too. They a relentless with constant digging. I use plantskyyd pellets to sprinkle around the foundation has discouraged them from digging under the foundation. Now the roof I had a company come out and set traps.
