Allen's Hummingbird | Audubon Field Guide I think it has a slide showing different birds, because when I looked it had a pileated woodpecker. It seems like a really nice field guide.
AAnightowl, you might want to get a copy of National Geographic's Field Guide to the Birds of North America. It is very easy to use and extremely informative as to range, habitat, and seasonal coloration of birds. We always take a copy with us when just walking around, and there is another copy in the kitchen so we can identify birds in the field.
So many ways to ID just about anything living online… I have a plant ID app take a pic of the plant and soon the app sends a ID. Or you tube discovery channels so much info. So many ways… What did we ever do before computers? Well I had stacks of books and magazines to fill a room. Was heartbreaking to clean out my collection .
@marlingardener funny I saw that book yesterday at Barnes and Noble almost picked it up. I got one that focused on my state because my daughter is asking about the birds we see when outside.
Clay, birds move around a lot from state to state. The Guide is available at used book stores and on-line. Our oldest is from the '90s and the newer one isn't all that much newer!
