Thank you. It’s pretty smoky outside. Keeping windows and air vents blocked and air filters on inside. A new fire started yesterday as the winds blow the smoke across the valley here.

Looks as if we're in for a more cloudy day today although we do have a glimmer of sunshine at the moment.

Today 88F. Marine layer misty overcast, cloudy and smoke has dissipated.
The wild fire near us has been 100% contained . Thank you firefighters. The hero’s of this fire season. No homes or property was lost. A few firefighters were treated with heat exhaustion, and many locals prepared beds and food for all of them. I can’t imagine climbing up and down these mountains to do the extreme fire prevention and carrying hoses right next to these fires.

73 F here this morning, Yes, I am in Canada but I still prefer Fahrenheit to Celsius. Post-tropical storm Debby just blew through last night so it is wet and soggy today. Have a good day every one!

Same as for Pac, and the same thoughts. Except maybe not as smoky here.

Tomorrow should be much cooler. I might do more rehab on the second section of border. Mainly putting down light weight tree chip mulch, maybe start digging out the blackberry deer fence. Or not.

@Daniel W Blackberry brier patch is that your deer fence. We have same issues with wild blackberry canes poppin up . The deer luv blackberries. I try to spray them when they are small. But it doesn’t always work out . Rains tend to make it difficult in May /by June they fly across the fields.

I have an area about 35’ x 10’ full of wild blackberries. My lazy attack mode is to use my light weight battery op 3’ trimmer. Trim down and back as much as possible keep trimming into small chunks. I take my time it may take a day or two no messing up joints and backs. Skip the huge canes for later just clip the smaller ends. Then I let them sit for a day or two in this heat they dry out fast. Then take my mower in the mulch mode and drive the mower over them a few times. Then let that sit a few days come back and mulch again and they are mulched to oblivion . It’s no digging no mess no fuss. In this heat they shrink up fast. They can come back next season if I don’t spray them in fall.

    What is your technique ?

@Pacnorwest I grow a thornless blackberry called "Triple Crown". Very big, juicy, flavorful blackberries, no thorns. I have a fence around it to keep deer from eating the plants. I did have more, but it's too much. The deer fencing is challenging to deal with, so I'm removing all but one blackberry "bush " and reducing to fenced area by more than half.

There are also wild Himalayan blackberry brambles all around. I try to keep cutting them off. I use a pruner and try to dig out the crowns when I can. Years ago, the brambles covered a 20 foot by 100 foot area. I would take out my workplace frustrations by lopping off blackberry brambles. Now, that area is grass. Blackberries don't survive regular mowing.
