We popped over to visit a friend that hot day day-before-yesterday. We took our tea and bikkies outside her house on the patio next to the canal.

We were laughing it up and swilling tea when what to my wandering eyes did appear— a blue heron on a feeding foray.

He continued and at one point stepped out of the water and climbed up the bank. He was not frightened by the sheep there.

My Bride whipped out the fone and snapped a coupla piccies. We continued with our tea and bikkies and the heron moved on downstream. Nature is full of surprises.

Blue heron is a nice pic and summary of those hunters out for lunch. We have them here too, they are a large bird and funny how they can fly with such an odd shaped body . They are graceful , noisy and it’s hard to imagine when watching them putter thru the landscape that they can fly off in an instant for such a big bird.

Nice pic, we have a heron around here sometimes, looking for fish in the fish ponds but i don't think that it's blue.

Loggie— there are different types. Our blue herons are more grey than blue.

Pac—You are right about that. I find them fascinating to watch. We have a large nesting place just a few steps from where I live.

Perhaps they're the same colour then.
    That's fascinating.

When we lived on the lake, we had resident Blue Herons. I loved watching them. I miss that

Kay—I can imagine how you miss the lake herons. I look forward to their arrival each jan-feb. There are always some that hang around certain places in the area, including our allotment.

    Lovely pics @Sjoerd .
We get a lot Herons here as they like to visit the lakes just across the lane from us, very regal looking when they stand still and frozen to the spot eyeing up their next meal.:)

Cheers Oreti. They are just simple pics from a fone…just to give an idea. The herons are wary of humans but not frightened, per se. Sometimes at fish and chip stalls or McDonalds, they will approach humans in hopes they will gift them a morsel.

To me, that seems exotic and beautiful. We each have interesting and wonderful things in our areas, if our eyes are open to see them.

Too right, Daniel. That is a philosophical comment that has layers and applications.
