The broad beans were planted out in the lottie after being hardened-off on the balcony, already a few weeks ago now. We have had some warmish and dry weather. 27 april they were presenting their first blooms. So then, we could move on to the next phase— weeding the plants that have been under the white Enviromesh all the while. We removed it, shook it out then draped it across the bean poles to dry out. It is unsightly to be sure; however, it is temporary. Enough worrying about keeping up appearances, moving on to the job at hand: It is difficult to distinguish where the weeds end and where the broadies begin. We could carefully pass a schoffel up and down the rows; but for the removal closer to the plants, it was a question of hand-picking. The end result was a just reward for the tedious work. We lowered the support strings to give the plants some support and that was job done. Now then, time to plant time to begin planting the climbers. We have three types of those and we plant varying amounts around each pole. The seeds were germinated in root trainers. In this next pic you can see how the root trainers work, guiding the roots downward. This way the roots do not grow in continuous circles. Take a look: Righty- ho then, time to chuck them into the ground. I will plant more in the coming days when the weather warms again. That’s the beans sorted for now, time to move on to other tasks now.
Excellent @Sjoerd I've got a tray of Bridgwater beans that I started to harden off but then stopped as the icy North wind came back. Just sown trays of Dwarf Beans as well. All sorts of other plants waiting to go out here but the beans are at the back
A tray of new seedlings is sucg a lovely thing to see. Congrats on your new seedlings, the coldness ought to be over in a couple of days.
beans beans the more you eat... I love beans! I never had much success growing them. Maybe I'll try again this year. Yours looks so nice! I can't wait to see what you get!
Shaw— ha ha ha…I know that one. It ends with, “ …so let’s go back for another meal”. Chuckle. I am crazy about beans too. So far, so good with the beans but it is early days still. I will do updates periodicaly.
