All project plants have fruit on them. Outside looking in: As you can see, they have been generously suckered, pruned and tied-in. They have been mulched with chopped comfrey leaves. The feeding with comfrey tea is frequent as is the watering.
Hooray, we have colour! Yes the first tom to show colour is a Cherry tomato sort inside my glass house. We are over the moon— that an adult man can feel such a childish joy about this is astonishing…but it’s why I love gardening. Today the sun feels very hot on the skin, even through a shirt; however, things had to be done. It was again time to sucker, tie-up, prune and water all the toms. This was a watering day, rather than a feeding day, but it had to be done, especially with the heatwave on the way. Here are the toms on one side of the greenhouse, several plants had to be topped as well: Another plant was showing this: Then the eight plants trialing over by the neighbours got the same treatment as the rest: So far, so good.
This specimen was not suposed to be ribbed at all. I is growing outside, and interestingly enough, the same sort that is growing in the glass house is not ribbed. It is the “I”.
I really like your ribbed tomatoes !!! So very dark green leaved and healthy looking !! When I have grown them they seem to put on one huge flush of big tomatoes and then that's it, they poop out. I think it just may be my climate because they stop flowering as soon as it gets hot.
Maybe ribbing on the tom’s outside could be related to temperature fluctuations. The greenhouse toms are a bit more in controlled temps by merely inside the greenhouse. It may be not as cool or as hot during the day to develop ribs in comparison to the other tom’s grown outside.
Annie—ta for the nice words about the toms. We give them the best care we can. I wonder why you have less than optimal success with your toms. If you are not happy, the whole process may be worth a re-think, from the seed choice to the soil to the planting. Pac— you are right about the possibilities. When we did the periodic check-in with the developer. He noticed the same with his own test plants. It is a curiosity, but it is up to him to suss that out.
Looking good Sjoerd I have one plant that has overwintered which is bearing plum tomatoes only I'm pretty sure it didn't have plum tomatoes on it last year
