Good Tuesday morning all. Currently 21°C and clear. The heat warning continues and I've got another hot day to deal with. Some rain would be a great thing, but I don't think theres any in the forecast for at least a few days.
Last night after work I was kinda moody. Came home and had a swim and then started looking around the yard and on the porches and outside the garage and realized there was lots of stuff laying around. I cleaned all that up by putting things away and raking a little and felt much better about the way things looked. Then I watered the garden and had another swim and went to bed. I guess today will be much of the same at work and chances are I'll be a little moody again too. haha

Today is to be our first three digit day of the year. No one is complaining, since by this time we usually have had at least 10, sometimes more, days at or above 100 degrees.
We had bunnies dancing on the front and back yards, and the cat watched them from inside the air conditioned house. She ain't no dumb bunny!
Not much on tap today except a bit of cooking (pasta salad in deference to the weather) and a lot of cat petting.

Happy Birthday to everyone I missed!

A bit of summer doldrums here. When it's too hot, I go out in the cool am to water everything. It takes an hour or two. I put several watering cans in a wagon and pull them to where they are needed, to reduce carrying and trips, and speed it up.

I am starting to plan for next year. There will be more downsizing the gardens. The container mini-dahlias make a big splash, then don't amount to much. So I won't overwinter those. I also want to reduce the container roses by 1/3 or 1/2, planting the biggest into the main rose garden where they need less care. The big motivation was fragrance, but they are not that fragrant after all. I will get rid of half of the day-lilies. I might dig up a favorite or two and containerize them this winter, so they can be enjoyed more on the front deck.

It's gradual, one step at a time, but a true reversal from years of adding more. There is a genuine sense of reduced burden. I want to cut back the container border too, mostly the geraniums. There it's a problem of, they all look too nice, plus I get attached to them after caring for them for many years, and nobody will want those. I think I'll pick a few that won't get overwintered but keep most of them.

Indoors, the decluttering is slowed down because there is so much less, which is nice. There is still some to do. I contacted two quilt museums to see if they want my great-grandmother's century-old quilt. No response so far. Ditto with the 60 year-old "vintage" sewing machine I posted to sell.

I removed hard drives from three old lap-top computers. The computers went to Best Buy for their recycle program. I need to destroy the hard drives. There is one more lap top remaining.

We had new flooring installed in the front entrance and hallways. More bright white-ish marble-ish. It's a light brighter! New baseboard, also nicer! Next comes painting. I have been procrastinating that.

We bought a Roomba robotic vacuum that also dry mops. That's a big help too.

 

Good Wednesday morning all. Currently 18°C and clear. Another hot day ahead, and still no rain. I am getting very tired of dragging hoses around. I'm hoping that there will be an afternon thunderstorm today.
Work today and then tonight is our skating clubs annual general meeting. Hoping it wont be more than an hour, but I think it usually runs for 2.

Another busy day ahead, Thursday being grass cutting and trimming day at work, and then I have a client after work for a couple of hours.
Then home to water the gardens.

@Frank Good work! Being new here it's taking awhile to get to know folks. I really feel for you with the downsizing. We too have been furiously sorting and donating and adding to the landfill. It's a very good feeling to see the bottoms of the drawers and other hiding spots for the junk.

It seems like I'm doing things backwards in the food garden by putting new ones in. The truth is I'm terrified of not having access to food. Just yesterday dh explained to me how I could use some things we have to make a grow tunnel to put over the berries. I didn't realize he was thinking this way too. So now I think we're stepping into more growth in the food department.

The flower gardens are definitely suffering now. I just really don't care about them at this point. I am finally getting around to tending what I call my sungarden. It used to be full of so many colors of perennials. Absolutely beautiful. Without adding plants this year I'm left with all pink flowers blooming now. Yuck. I bought a dark red lobelia yesterday just to try to break up the monotony and brought up a yellow flowering something or other from a different garden to help. It does look better, but I'm so far behind in the flowers. I guess I just don't care

TGIF!! Good Friday morning all. Currently 13°C and clear. It sure is getting dark in the morning!
I started getting up a little earlier this week so I could do a workout, and just completed the 5th one. I must say, my abs are a little sore again today! No pain on gain, so I've gotta keep on it. And once it stops hurting it will be time for a harder workout haha
Today is the 22nd anniversary of moving to our rural property. Amazing how quickly the time passes.
I just want to get through the day, and I look forward to 2 pm when my weekend starts.

Columbia— lovely sunflower. It sounds like a good plan getting more colour up to that plot.
It sounds so odd to me to hear you say you don’t care about your plots. What’s going on, pal?

 

Today I painted the "Family Room", which is basically a second dining room. The sewing machine is there, and the fireplace that I painted the brick with primer. Next, paint the fireplace brick with and eggshell topcoat, and paint the baseboard. Then sone touch up, and it's done.

What a difference, a coat of paint can make!

Good Sunday morning all. Currently 15°C and overcast. Or is that smoke again? I can't smell it today, but it sure seems smokey out.
Yesterday was a busy day! The contractor came to finish the floor and baseboard trim, and a friend brought me some gravel for the driveway. We filled the potholes and raked it out and it took a total of 4.5 yards of soil to do the entire driveway. I sure didn't think it would take that much! After that was done I cut the grass in the garden and down the sides of the driveway and then cleaned the pool. Picked a few tomatoes and some beans and a zucchini. It is SO dry, and everything is suffering. No rain in the forecast either, until the 10th of August and even then its only 2-4mm. The farmers are going to be screaming soon, as the fields are parched and the soybeans are showing stress. Also expecting 30+ degree heat so its not good. Someone needs to do a rain dance!
Theres a few jobs on my list today, nothing too strenuous.

I think the reason is that I'm so focused on developing good food gardens this year @Sjoerd . I feel a profound need to increase our healthy food supply. The walls of government that protect our rights to have organic foods are coming down. Im a person who was hood winked into taking 7 different medications for over 17 years. Im now off of all of them and doing much better than i ever was while taking them. We are being fooled into consuming absolute poison. The key now is paying attention to what we consume. I would prefer to be think of only the beauty of the flower gardens, but I think for now I'm OK with being concerned about the quality of our food. Mostly for the next generation. I want to provide for their health.

 

Good Monday morning all. Currently 17°C and smokey. We have another air quality advisory happening today, due to the forest fires in northern Manitoba. I can see it and smell it, so it can't be good for us.
Off to work, where I already know its going to be a stressful week due to a few text messages I got before bed last night. At least I've been warned.
The count down to next weekend begins haha
