What have you done today in the Garden?

Really nice onion harvest @Sjoerd . They're all so uniform in size too !! Mine are all over the place in size and I try to give them all the same attention.

 

Nothing....just harvesting as I see things ripen.

 

Not much today as I had other jobs to do. I noticed when I was painting, the tea-house earlier in the week there was a little bit of rot at bottom of the end of the side skirt, where it meets the skirt at the front, (which is fine). I cut out the bit of rot and gave the bottom of the skirt some coats of Cuprinol over three days. Tomorrow, I'll fettle a bit of 2" x 1" pine and fit it.
It's not that big a job. It will need rubbing down and painting, but then it should. as my old dad used to say, "see me out."

 

I harvested seeds from the wild red poppies and did some watering.
I'll put the seeds into a paper bag and put them in the tin that i keep my seeds in.

I filled up some seed starting pots with starter soil and have 26 little pots soaking, from the bottom up, in water. They will be ready for planting brassica seeds tomorrw. Other than that I did housework...yeck !!

 

Power washing was on the list today. Clearing a walkway from plants to pass thru the area. And removing roof moss from the shed .

I made a start on repairing the tea-house skirt this morning.
Not a pretty sight.






Trimmed the skirt back with a jigsaw, so that the bit of decades old 2" x 1" pine I had would fit exactly..

Not that easy, I needed it screwed and glued to the skirt above it. Fortunately I've a couple of Z screwdriver blades, as it would have been impossible to get even a "stubby" screwdriver under it. I managed to get two long screws into it, turning the screwdriver blade with some pliers.





I used a waterproof dark wood filler. Still looks a bit of a mess, but solid enough.




I'll rub it down and give it a first coat of paint tomorrow, although it might need a little bit more filler, but I bought two tubes, just in case.

I gave the front garden, "a go over," pruned off wayward bits of the viburnums and azaleas, mowed the lawn and gave it some feed. Cleared a lot of dead leaves between the planting and the party fence.

We harvested more Cucumbers....so many this year on 3 plants, next year I'll only grow one..no two ,one as back up. Lots of the little tomatoes too.

Massive deadheading ot the Petunias today as they haven't been done for a couple of days.

Watering all potted plants..

Hubs has almost finished the weeding of the various pathways. He's done a thorough job lifting the bricks as he goes to remove the roots.

We've packed it in for now as it's too hot to work in. Might go out later.

I have started to seal up some of the harvested seeds that have been drying out for the past couple of weeks.

 

As it was threatening rain a couple of times this afternoon and as the filler had gone off, I decided to rub it down and put a first coat of paint on it. The new bit shows up as it's naturally a lighter shade, is it was bare white pine.





it'll maybe need a couple more coats, but not before Tuesday, I need to let the paint on the bare wood dry properly.

This is one of my "Z screwdrivers," flat one end Philips the other, they came with a cheap set of conventional screwdrivers a couple of years ago.

Without them, I may have had to remove the whole skirt, how easy that would have been after 38 years I'd rather not think about.

 

So far today, I harvested plums and mulberries.

Left to right, those are Methley, Illinois Everbearing mulberries, and Hollywood plums. The plums will be cut and frozen, and the mulberries frozen, to be used in evening snack greek yogurt smoothies.

These are so juicy, mild, and sweet. I wish more people would grow fruit trees. They are so rewarding, nutritious, and tasty. Not as much trouble as you might think.

There are lots more in my home orchard.

I used fruit harvesting as the moment to prune back the mulberry tree. I took about eight feet off the top. I couldn't reach the berries! I hope I didn't kill the tree, but it needed to be done.

For taste, mulberries are one of my most favorites. So full of flavor, rich, juicy, and sweet.
