We harvested quite a lot of beans, paprikas and tom…but it was also time to collar the leeks. I am two weeks or so too late, but other chores took precidence. We can harvest the leeks in two or three weeks if we want.

What is the purpose of the collars? Do they help keep them upright? @Sjoerd ?

Annie— the collars are to force the lower stem to be white. The white portion is what I eat.

Oh, and I thought you just planted in a trench and filled it in with dirt as they grow. Your way is much cleaner !!

Annie— I do plant them in a hole in the bottom of a trench, the collar is just to extend the length of the whiteness.

Oh no, that is bad; but with this dryness and heat it is little wonder. Sorry to hear about it though. I hope they will have time to grow and fatten-up a bit.
