This is Achimenes or Cupid's Bower. It is right now covered in these purple flowers. The leaves are fuzzy and a deep maroon underneath. It will bloom till fall when it goes dormant. It grows from tiny scaly tubers, which multiply rapidly:

Oh, that is a pretty plant, I can see why you love it.
I have heard of Cupid's Bower, does it grow well in the ground or should be potted?

daff, yes it is a pity. But the tubers are relatively cheap, maybe you can find a mail order company in the UK that handles them. They come in shades of purple, pink, white, red and peach.

The only reason I knew what it was when I saw it at the garage sale was because of my endless hours perusing catalogs and the internet looking at flowers. Park Seed has the tubers, 4 different colors, 10 of each for $4.95 each color, I think. Or you can get the collection, 10 of each color, 40 tubers in all. for $14.95. Don't I sound just like a salesman. lol I plan on ordering them next spring, it is already too hot to plant them now. They do hold up all summer into the fall in our intense Louisiana heat.
