Hello. I've come to this forum seeking advice concerning houseplants. Next fall, I will be moving into a new place. I've decided that I want my room to have several houseplants, but I'm unsure of what to get. Let's look at my situation, shall we? I live in Newfoundland, so it doesn't get very warm here. The room I will be renting gets "plenty of sunlight", according to my friend who owns the house. I also would like something... Lush, if that's the word. Bushy and wholesome. It'd also be nice if it was a flowering houseplant. It'd be great if it has a long lifespan, and is relatively hardy. On a side note, one of my favourite flowers is the Forget-me-not. Can those be grown indoors? Thank you for any input you may have. I only have one plant right now, which I revived from the brink of death, so getting it some 'company' will be a nice idea.
Hi Pekoe, Welcome to the Stew. I don't think that Forget-me-nots would be very happy living indoors, and their period of bloom is relatively short for a houseplant. But if you generally like blue flowering plants, Streptocarpella 'Concord Blue' ("Bavarian Bells"), a relative of the African Violets, is quite adaptable to growing in a bright indoor location. Have a peek here. I'm not endorsing this seller, but they had a good photo of the plant.
Thank you for your advice. While it's a shame that forget-me-nots prefer the outside environment, Concord Blue are very nice! Hopefully I can find one nearby, as there's not a lot in terms of nurseries. (Just home-improvement, grocery and department stores.) Anyhow, thanks a bunch.
Begonias get bushy and bloom a lot. I don't think they come in blue though. Just red, pink and white. I have a spider plant that takes over my bookshelf in winter. It gets lots of babies. I, also, have kalenchoe which blooms almost all winter. It doesn't take cold well so it needs the sun but not too close to the window. My mom had something she called "Wandering Jew" that vined and had purple flowers. Hope that helps some. Dooley
I have a wandering jew that I really like. The flowers are small and you have to look for them but the leaves are a deep purple on the back and a light green with a dark green strip on the front. The leaves have like hair on them and it makes it look shiny. My first one got to be 5' when I had to cut it back because the vines were braking. I all so have a asparagus fern that doesn't have flowers that I know of but is really bushy and airy looking.
Thanks for the help, everyone. I'm beginning to think a Chinese Evergreen and an African Violet are the best choices. I'm just concerned about humidity levels, as it's not usually humid where I live.
