Very few birds stay around in the winter. The woodpecker will stay, as long as he finds food.

I like watching woodpeckers come in the winter. Though I'm sure their around in the summer, I just see them more in the winter. Lets keep feeding our hungry featherd friends.

Yes, we have them here year round. We don't have that white stuff much so they eat well.I do not encourage them to come into my yard as the cats all seem to be here and I don't want them to be cat food.

There is a woodpecker who hangs around the dead tree in my neighbors backyard. He is really active in the spring when trying to attract a mate but is much quieter the rest of the year.

We haven't got many of those, just sporadic visits. I like them. I got to see a dwarf woodpecker by the stables once, and nearly called the council to get the place made into a sanctuary. :)

We have them year round at our feeders...we must have more bugs here in Wisconsin than you! I had one of the large pileated woodpeckers hanging off of my small suet feeder last week. I thought he was going to take the whole stand down, he was so huge. Really neat to see, though, and we don't see them very often.

It's nice to see that woodpecker. It looks big. They are such interesting birds. I did not actually realise that they ate seeds and things like that. I have seen pics of them on or near feeders before, but I still find in amazing that they raid the seed-feeders.
Thanks very much foir showing the piccies. Well done.

    Thanks for comments everyone.
Sjoerd: This one is about medium. We do have a bigger one that comes around. I've even come accustom to their sound and the taping on the tree.

I wanted to follow up with this, as I just shot this picture of the pileated woodpecker at my suet feeder. He was there for quite awhile while chickadees and nuthatches continued to eat on other feeders. Pretty neat on this cold, cold day (-45 F with the windchill).

It's such a beautiful bird! You're so lucky to have those close to you. All we've got at the moment are blackbirds, different tits and one robin.

I love watching them too. We get the big ones on the cedar tree trunks. I used to put suet out for them, but the squirrels grabbed it all up.

My husband has several feeders out all year round so he has a very of visitors. They always seem to be around during the day when I am at work so I miss them but he says he has had woodpeckers.
