When the temp hit the 100 degree mark early this afternoon (it's now 103) this years streak of consecutive 100+ degree days took the #3 position in the record books, bumping the year 1952 down to #4.

On Saturday we will tie for #2 and then it is just a short hop, skip and jump of 13 days to tie with that gloriously roasting summer of 1980.

In a perverse way I am kind of proud of the year 2011 for holding onto this streak. I don't really care for odd numbers but 2011 is one of only two odd number years to make the list below in the last 100 years and 2011 has successfully passed that other odd number year and 6 even number years to reach #3. It has two more even number years to beat to reach the #1 spot and I have every confidence in the world that it can do it.

    Greatest Consecutive 100+ degree days
    Rank # of Days Dates
    1 -- 42 Jun 23 - Aug 3, 1980

I can't garden, I can't even get up the desire to start planning which new plants to order for fall planting....so I read statistics

Too hot for me Toni! I thought I liked the heat until we had one day of 100°F last week. You can keep it! :D

We've had a bit of a heatwave over here in Scotland too. The temperatures have reached 19C to 20C (around 69F) which is HOT for us poor Scots who are more used to much colder weather. I think I'd flake out completely if we had temperatures like yours!! :smt010

Eileen, summers in Scotland sound perfect to me!

I lived in Texas for almost 10 years including the summer of 1980. I need to get the T shirt that says "I survived Texas summer of 1980" but havent seen them in awhile. Thankfully, we had AC that summer! And it was in the 100s in MAY where we were the spring of 1978, we also had a PLAGUE of ticks that summer, at least in Bell and Hood Counties. Eeewwww... The ground was covered in them.

Toni, you can keep that record, and please don't cook my son, DIL and grandson to death while you are at it. My one son thinks he is a "Texan" just because the Army had me hostage and I had no choice of his birthplace.

I like the heat, but this is even too hot for me. 80-90f. are comfortable to me, I keep the ac at 78, just to keep the humidity at a "safe for the pianos" level. How high is the humidity level there? here it can get up in the 90%'s very quick. Humidity makes a huge difference in how tolerable the temperature is.

Suddenly 91 and no humidity doesn't seem so bad.

Eileen: your temp's sound wonderful to me. I always joke with my hubby that I must be part Eskimo since I do not like temp's over the 70's. 69 degrees would be right up my alley so to speak. Maybe I'm part Scottish and don't know it. :-D We keep our air conditioning set at 72 degrees day and night. I even have a fan blowing on me when we sleep to keep things cooler. :-D My honey just uses more covers to keep warm. :stew1:

Don't I know it!! And from March through October it never feels cooler than the temperature reading.
Humidity levels here vary widely and daily but you can always add at least 5 degrees to the temperature, sometimes 10 if there is no wind at all, to get what the temperature actually feels like.

Dry heat, moist heat.... It is all horrid to me. I hate the heat, and much prefer cold weather. My genepool is from northern Europe and the temps there do not get so hot, at least that is what I have heard. I never get my heat over 70 if I can help it--if I do make a mistake stoking my wood stove a bit much, I open the window on the front door and let it all out. When I have AC, I never set it above 70, preferably down around 60 if I can get the darn thing to do it. [the old ones used to go down to 45 or 50 ;) and freeze me out, which was great.] I never did like the climate in Texas, it always made me sick all summer long.

    Wow ... that's almost 38 C.
    Quite hot.
We've had around 35 C and some people said some thermometers showed over 40 C.
But now. Quite cool. And cloudy. And it rains now and then. Love it like it is now.
But it's gonna pass and the heat will be back.

Yea, 2011 did it, I knew it could. Today's 101 degree temp put it in a tie for #2 with 1998. Now the march is on to reach the 1980 record of 42. That number is only 13 days away and with the weather people continually saying that there is no change in our weather coming in the near future it shouldn't be difficult to ram right through the next 2 weeks and find 2011 in #1 place.
