Remember this escapee? That thing needed space so badly that it grew through the holes in the fencing. Pity that we did not notice sooner when we were suckering or pruning. Well, there are penalties for laxness: The Tom’s bulge would not fit through the holes in the racks when it was time to harvest it, so the Bride had to show it who was the boss and ripped it through the the fence, removing its ear. We ate the ear in celebration; however, that was yesterday evening— today the rest went into the pot to make concentrate.
That’s a huge tom so the cage opening was too small to remove the tomato. Well you save it and that what counts. Everything grown in the garden is a precious gift.
I love when tomatoes grow all bulged and oddly shaped !! Every one of the weirdly formed ones taste better to me than the perfectly round ones. . That might just be my imagination but, who cares !!
There have been several seed types that have made these large toms with peculiar forms. They are all beef tomato’s for use in sauces and of course BLT’s and hamburgers.
