Zinnias are colorful annuals for the Summer garden. Grandfather grows tall zinnias from seed. Zinnias come in an array of colors, multi-colors and hues. Zinnias come as yellow, orange, white, red, rose, pink, purple, lilac, and multi-colored blooms.
Sow zinnia seeds only one fourth inch deep. You may see zinnia seedlings in only four to seven days for some varieties.
We planted zinnias a couple of years ago, and they self-seeded so easily that we no longer buy seed. We found that hummingbirds like zinnias--who knew? The taller ones are a great cut flower, the different types have different flower heads--from the cactus flowering to the single petal types, and the colors are of the rainbow and beyond. As an all-around satisfactory flower, zinnias are among the best!
Marlingardener, That is a nice feature of zinnias: they self-seed. Sometime it is hard to find seeds of a particular colored zinnia. With the self-seeding, hopefully all the colors grow again.
A peach zinnia is a nice color. http://www.pinterest.com/pin/62135669832202657 Proar Rose Zinnias grow 30 to 36 inches tall. They are easy to grow in large containers. http://www.pinterest.com/pin/69383650479209410 Compact zinnias, which attain a height of only twelve inches, are a response to the increased popularity of container gardening and smaller garden spaces. "Big Red" and "Luminosa Pink" zinnias are especially suited to attract butterflies. Lilac Empress Zinnias have huge violet/purple flowers with tousled petals. They bloom all Summer long and the butterflies, including Monarchs, just will not leave them alone.
