After waffling between "Gallery" and "Fruit and Vegetable" forums for this post I finally made up my tiny little mind. Here is a photo of the first almond picking. We estimate this is somewhere between one-third and one-half of the whole crop. Trout Almondine anyone?

That looks like a lot more fun than the bag of almonds in aisle 6 of the supermarket.

With all the hot Texas weather, do you have to water your trees? They almost look like peach pits. Is there a covering to the nut?

Jerry, we water the trees during drought, which means we've been watering weekly for two months. Thank heavens for the rain barrels!
The outer covering is the same as unshelled almonds at the store, except it is harder and browner. After we break through the shell, the almond nugget is inside. I'm reading up on toasting almonds. There may be small bags of "Texas almonds" in Christmas baskets this year!
