These are from my old fashioned petunias. Wish I could get DNA from this color variation. Sorry couldn`t get a better pic but wind was blowing like crazy here.

Mart, those are sweet. Do you save the seeds every year? If you ever have enough to share, I would be delighted to trade you something for some.

Well I once had a polka dot plant and have had many varieties of petunia BUT I've never seen a Polka Dot Petunia before!! I wonder if they sell packets of the seeds over here. If they do then guess who'll be buying some? :-D

Carolyn,, didnt know petunias had seed ! Sorry folks but these petunias are the old fashioned type and can vary some what each year. This year it just decided on polka dots. This is in just one clump at the corner of the house. I have no other types so it can`t cross. No neighbors have petunias and they are so far away crossing would be unlikely. These are mowed down on occassion, usually the first blooms of the year have the odd color patterns.

Oh cool, Mart, These plants are saved from year to year then? I start all my petunias from seed, but if for some strange reason these are sterile, you wouldn't see any seed pods,(or if you keep the flowers pinched off).

This is an immature seed pod.

This is a mature seed pod. When the seeds are ripe they split open and dribble out. they don't explode like an impatiens seed pod. the foliage of the petunias is sticky and the seeds tend to stick to the foliage, too.

Before the pod splits open it will turn from green to creamy to tan. You can snip the stem of the pod off then and drop it into a paper bag or even a pill container as long as you leave it open to finish ripening and dry out, and then you can store them for the winter.

I don`t think so,,unless they had them many years ago. These start out a light purple and most of the others that grow around the house are that color. But these old fashioned ones were planted probably 30 years ago. They will vary the pattern almost every year. More drastically at this southwest corner of the house. I think its just a quirk in the gene that keeps mutating. But I could be wrong.

Mart, I was out in the greenhouse today pinching petunias and there was a petunia in pale orchid that was splashed with white. No particular pattern though, like yours. I still like yours better than the one I found today.
