    Aristolochia - Dutchman's Pipe

So here I am having this nice plant in my greenhouse as Winter approaches. What's a girl do do??

I want to leave it in the greenhouse over the Winter but am afraid it may do it harm. Then in late Spring it will go outside and back into the greenhouse next Winter.

    What do all you think?

Can't anyone help me out here? You guys from the South must be able to tell me about this plant.

I want to know if this little plant needs to take a rest in the cool weather or will it be ok in 70 degree Winters and higher in the Summer. Does it need a rest time? Will it just die, like an annual? Does it bloom every year?

As my Winter arrives I would like to get it in the conditions that I may need.

Thank you so much. Why didn't I think of that?

I guess I didn't think Googling would answer a question about keeping an outdoor plant indoors.

I feel pretty good about planning on keeping this plant in the greenhouse for the Winter and then putting it outside each Summer.

I will be keeping it in a pot which now I realize I will be able to move it around to accommodate it's sunlight requirements. I could even have a wall of trellis in pots outside for these plants in the Summer. I think that would look wonderful as long as they bloomed.

This is one of those vines I've always wanted but never found for sale, or seeds. If memory serves, this blooms 'underneath' so good to plant by a porch where the shady side can be observed. Is it not hardy where you are?

It is a valuable host plant in the range of the pipevine swallowtail butterfly.

I hope it is not this one, if you are in this butterflys' range:

purpleinopp, I never looked the zone up. I am in 6a and it can live from 5 to 8. That means it will live in my yard.....

Well, I didn't know that...me wonders why on one has that plant around here...

I just may let it live in the greenhouse for this Winter and put it's little feet in the ground next Spring.

    Thanks.

I would like to have it for its' value as a host plant.

Here are gulf fritillary caterpillars on passion vine on the 4th:

Same spot a minute ago, little closer view. There are so many eating it, there's virtually nothing left. If they can get enough to eat, they will make a cocoon.

Cocoons on fence, the butterflies will come out of these.
