Hello everyone. Been a while since I last posted something. I am doing it now cause I want to do something right. I got some colorful calla rhizoms from Taiwan about 2 years ago. In September I planted them in pots on the balcony and then inside the house when the winter came over. Next spring I planted them outside, but i a rather shady place. Whole summer just leaves, nothing else, no flowers. Then decided last fall to dig them out and store them over the winter. Now it's almost spring and my rhizoms look like they want to grow. I really don't know what to do. Plant them in pots and later on when it's warm enough - still two more months, I'd say - re-plant them outside in the garden? As you can see they have really started growing and don't want to waste another year without flowers.... would be a shame. I'd like to show my parents what they are and what color the flowers are - I don't really know that either. WHAT do you think I should do? Please don't send me links... I'd rather read what you yourselves have done with success in a similar condition - Romania has temperate climate. We are still in winter and rea spring kicks in around end of April.
I would definitely put them into some good fertile potting medium now. They've decided not to wait for warm weather to arrive. :-D I've grown Callas with equal success in pots or in the ground, so if you do choose to transplant them into the garden later, you should be able to do that when your weather warms up adequately. I find that they do well in a location that gets some morning sun, but is in dappled shade by about 10am, our summer sun is too fierce for them. Oh, I think I'd better go and have a look at the ones I have stored, I may need to do put them in pots now, too.
thanks zuzu...... i also think it's about time. will think about it. the problem is if i decide to pot them now, they'd grow long skinny leaves as there isn't much sun in my room and anyway.... since it's winter, we get more cloudy days than sunny ones. btw, do they bloom first and then come the leaves or it doesn't really matter? cause i remember once in taiwan when i got the rhizoms, i planted some and some gave flowers first. just wondering. thanks... calin
You're very welcome. :-D Mine usually produce a few leaves before they flower, Calin and then continue to produce new foliage after, as well. Can you supplement the natural light with a "grow-light" to help keep your plants from getting a spindly start?
hehehe... zuzu... i got so many plants in my room and if i decide to start using artificial light... am gonna have to buy lots of spotlights. will just try to put them as close to the window as i can.
Ah hah, it's a jungle IN there, huh? I understand, in fact, I remember very well, needing to do just the same, and if I HAD put up all the supplementary lights I really needed, they would have been able to see my home glowing . . . from space.

That is really pretty Calin.I have the Prince seed sprouted and some brown seeds you sent are growing I have about 6 different types of seeds from you that are sprouted and some are growing leaves already.I will plant my Prince tonight.
maybe some fertilizer might help give them a boost,for the flower part,just not for the greenery,look for the right kind..
It looks as though you're doing everything right Calin with those Cannas. What a beautiful first flower. :-D I look forward to seeing all the rest when they flower too.
