Hello, I'm a design engineering student at Imperial College London. I'm conducting user research for a project that centres around designing garden tools and it would mean a lot to me if you take five minutes to fill out this questionnaire! Thank you for your time! Nice to meet you, and welcome to GardenStew! Please see this thread below - As I am already designing and building my own garden tools. https://www.gardenstew.com/threads/making-my-own-gardening-tools-which-will-last-forever.42170/
I don't want to put a damper on this, but for the average gardener on here, most will be using the design of tools that have hardly changed in hundreds of years except for those that use mechanical power. It will be impossible to "re-invent the wheel" All the major tool manufacturers will have pretty much exhausted all the ideas of any new tool that would sell in volume. But best of luck.
Design engineers study, research and develop ideas for new products and the systems used to make them. They also modify existing products or processes to increase efficiency or improve performance. I like the modify part. It is the weakest link. I mean ergonomics that are mental as well as physical.
