Every year we buy another gigantic roll of plastic to cover the greenhouse. It is 16 X 26 and we put 2 layers of plastic over the glass to help hold the heat in. We keep the temperature from 60 to 70 degrees over the winter. We are adding a pellet stove as the main source of heat and will use the karosene monitor furnace as a back up. We have a generator to run the pellet stove and an system that phones us if the power goes out. So this plastic is massive. We open it up in the green grass in the back yard and refold it to make it easier to drag it over the peek of the greenhouse. That is at least 12 feet high. Ladders are set up and ready for hubby to climb and pull it up and over. It is very heavy. I hold the bulk of it off the ground so it can be pulled easier. It doesn't take very long. Then the metal strips are screwed down to keep it from ripping off in wind. I love my greenhouse. It is a sad day to close it up but I can look forward to the next spring when I can see it's shiny glass again. Thank goodness I have my favorite hubby to do all this hard work with me. He is the best....
Barb, aren't we blessed with great husbands! That greenhouse, like the rest of your gardens, looks so tidy and well cared for.
LOL Tomorrow is going to be 80 degrees... LOL but the job is done and we can go in to other fall jobs...
That is a big job but well worth the effort to hold in the expensive heat! Your Hubby is a handy man to have around
Great-looking greenhouse and a great wrap job. It looks like you have everything well organized and are tucking -in your greenhouse for a winter rest. Say good night, Gracie......
Barb,..now that is a Greenhouse,..you have a great system for keeping the temperature up to 60 or 70 degrees and a great protection with the plastic covering though its a shame you have to purchase a new lot of plastic each year,..can you think of a way to re use the plastic?.
Well, I do reuse it but not for the greenhouse. I have a sale area for plants that I have used the plastic under all the plants. Then we mulch all around the plants to keep them for the winter. Other years we use it to protect the pheasants from the winter wind....
